Thunderbolt out of the blue

I've just been sacked.

My contract with Crédit Agricole Deveurope was to come up for renewal on May 1st. As I had had no warning, no inkling, no reason to suppose it wouldn't be renewed, I wasn't unduly worried about management's reticence on the matter; but last Friday, thinking to prevent a situation wherein I would report for work on Monday week and find I would no longer have access to the IT-systems, I casually mentioned the fact to my manager's manager. "Don't worry," she said, "I'll take care of it."

Imagine my surprise then when she called me into her office this morning and said that she had decided not to renew it. Her stated reason being that, since by law this next contract would have to be an indefinite one, she had had to think about whether taking me on would 'add extra value' to the current payroll, and had concluded that it would not.

The real reason, of course, is that having failed in getting rid of my previous manager, whose intended dismissal for reasons of personal antipathy were scuppered when the Board of Directors stepped in and promoted her to Business Controller (whatever that may be), she is now getting rid of those people this previous manager hired, trained and placed her trust in. Starting with me.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot I can do. Actually, after having taken advice from legal experts, there's nothing I can do. My current contract states that neither employee nor employer need observe the legal notice period, which is something I failed to spot when I signed the extention last year.

As for her contention that I would not add extra value: pah! I know my worth, and I'm not going to let her tell me differently.

Thank you. At the moment, I'm still in shock, but it's fast giving way to righteous indignation. Well, I'm entitled, aren't I?

Thank you. I hope so to, though I must confess, I'm not looking forward to having to apply for jobs again. I thought I'd done with all that a year and a half ago!

It's just starting to sink in. If this month's paycheck turns out to have been my last, how am I going to keep up the mortgage payments? Bloody hell, why couldn't I have kept my mouth shut?

True...18 months ago, I didn't know the first thing about the world of finance; now, I know it inside out and back to front. If nothing else, at least I've learnt what to watch out for in finance agreements.

Exactly my reaction.

'Cause when I asked her if my performance had been wanting in any way, shape or form, she said no...but she couldn't see me taking my place in the new team she's building...she said she had to take the long term view, whatever that may mean.

The thing is, Masjenka (the manager that gave me the boot), has timed it well: Gosia, my previous manager and now Business Controller, went on holiday for two weeks this weekend. If she'd been there, she'd have kicked up such a stink and I'm sure, would have succeeded in getting the decision overturned. As it is, she won't be back until May 11th...

Also, the CEO wasn't there, or I would have gone straight to him. He's another of the people I work(ed) with who's expressed great confidence in me.

Thank you. I'm quietly confident that it will...perhaps even here in my hometown! Because frankly, I can do without the commute.

How very charming of them. And a week's notice. How thoughtful.

Best of luck finding something very soon! - Hopefully wrapped in a silver lining.

How, indeed. And you know, I'm sure they'll not lose a minute's sleep over it. They say what goes around, comes around; but why am I never there to see it?
