Despite having followed AVG's instructions as to how to proceed in the event the software causes the e-mail client to stop sending and receiving e-mails to the letter, I have been unable to restore my Outlook Express to its former glory. I have now removed the virus checker and rebooted, but it still won't work. I don't know what to do next. Remove ZoneAlarm as well? Take off and reinstall everything? Is it worth it? I don't know. I can access my inbox through webmail -- maybe I should just count my blessings and stop tinkering...but I don't know if I can. I've never been very good at just leaving things. If, after this, you'll not hear from me again, you'll know I've completely messed up my system and driven myself off a tall cliff somewhere.

Oh, and I didn't feel like going to work today, so I didn't.

Download Mozilla Thunderbird. http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

Thanks! Maybe I will -- but what if whatever's messing up my Outlook, messes that up as well? I'm not sure I can keep relatively calm if that happens....

Though I don't use Outlook (due to having never mansged to set it up correctly), I'd blame ZoneAlarm rather than AVG. I have had such terrible problems with Firewalls, I gave up on them entirely for a bit. I now have a new one (which I can't remember the name of) and it's okay, but it still blocks my ftp program and I have to take the firewall down to use it.

But AVG identified itself as the culprit! It came up with the message that the e-mail scanner wasn't fully functional, and Grisoft's help pages said that meant that the AVG-EMS hadn't been configured, and then explained how you could do that manually. So I did that, and it still wouldn't work. So I took it off, and it still didn't work. So I took myself off, before i did something drastic...

But yeah, next step is removing ZA, and see if that helps.

Maybe AVG was just being kind.

D'ya think so?
Feb. 18th, 2005 03:46 pm (UTC)
Maybe there was a problem with the AVG check, because ZA was butting in.
Feb. 18th, 2005 04:50 pm (UTC)
You know, that sort of makes sense. My problems started after ZA updated itself without waiting for me to give it the go ahead...

Wish I could help, but I don't use any proper e-mail client-thingy. I used to, in the days of Netscape and an old POP address, but now I jut use gmail and some other web-based mail. I've downloaded the gmail notifier, though.

In short, stay away from the cliff!

In short, stay away from the cliff!

Awww -- don't worry: Holland is kind of flat, so there aren't any cliff to hurtling down here. I could throw myself off a dune top, though I doubt it would have the same impact...;-)

I now have a hilarious visual of that...

Glad to amuse...;-)

But having once gone arse over tea kettle down a dune, I can tell you: a pretty picture it ain't!
Feb. 18th, 2005 04:19 pm (UTC)
Pretty no, funny yes. (There are a few dunes where I grew up.)

Good for you. I'm all about skipping if you get the chance. Unfortunately, my profs have made it completely impossible to take mental health days this semester. Evil profs.

Hope you get that email figured out soon. Have you thought of switching over entirely to a web-based email system? I've still got gmail invites if you'd like one.

I've still got gmail invites if you'd like one.

thanks for the offer, but...erm...I'm on gmail already (and I keep getting my invites topped up all the time, too).
