Mum will be pleased!

I'm the picture of politeness -- or, I am, according to the outcome of this game, in which you're asked to imagine that you're a Victorian gentleman or lady. Of course, I chose the female role, thinking how hard can it be? Not too hard, as it turned out, and it would seem that some of my mother's lessons in ladylike behaviour as I was growing up have obviously not been a complete waste of her time and effort.

Very python.

Not half.

I got 449. That made me the same level as you.

I got 480 as a lady -- then played the game again as a man, with a final score of 500. That brings the total up to 980 out of the possible 1,000 -- not bad, eh?

Funnily enough, all my social gaffes as a woman came about while I was entertaining at home: first I chose the wrong dress (bare arms, oh no!), and then I took my husband's arm to lead the guests into the dining room.

As a Victorian gentleman, however, I didn't put a foot wrong; but then, the rules were very much simpler for men. I just needed to remember that ladies always come first!

I made the same mistakes at dinner. I also made a faux pas or two at the ball.

Never got round to doing the men's one.

I made the same mistakes at dinner.

It's funny that, isn't it? You'd think that at home, you could pretty much wear whatever you bloody well please (well, within reason and the bounds of propriety, of course)...

But thank goodness, I made no mistakes in any of the more public/formal settings! I can still maintain that my mother would be proud of me.

I created a lesibian scandal at the ball!
Mar. 6th, 2005 10:48 pm (UTC)
You did! Fie! How did you manage that?
Mar. 6th, 2005 10:49 pm (UTC)
I asked another lady to dance. There was gossip.
Mar. 6th, 2005 10:56 pm (UTC)
God, you sad case! Dance with another woman? That is the single most saddest, desparate thing in the world...I wouldn't be caught dead!

Oops! I just spilled some lovely Belgian beer on the ground...Mum would not be pleased to hear that. And it's not the spilling, mind, but the drinking of beer STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE! (or trying to, and I'm sure I could have pulled it off if I hadn't been imagining you waltzing across the ballroom with your wallflower cousin, too!).
Mar. 6th, 2005 10:57 pm (UTC)
I felt sorry for her.

I expect teacups rattled in many a posh salon after that.
Mar. 6th, 2005 11:05 pm (UTC)
Why yes, you might not have been too welcome at any of the other ladies' at homes for a good few days, I'd wager; for fear your gauche behaviour might rub off on their nubile and impressionable young daughters of the house.

OTOH, they might have just ignored it, and act like it never happened...
Mar. 6th, 2005 09:51 pm (UTC)
You know, even though that museum is only a couple blocks from my house I've never been there. That game sort of makes me want to go.
Mar. 6th, 2005 09:58 pm (UTC)
What are you waiting for? Get down there!
Mar. 7th, 2005 01:21 am (UTC)
Well that's a fun game for when you can't sleep! I got 980 I think. I had problems with lady's etiquette in train loos, the difference between a frock coat and tails and what to do if you tread on a lady's train. Duh!

It was really surreal. :D
Mar. 7th, 2005 05:06 am (UTC)
what to do if you tread on a lady's train

You would put the blame on someone else, or whistle a merry tune while the lady in question was standing there in her underwear and -no doubt- floods of tears? Tut tut! You sir, are a bounder; and I challenge you to a duel at dawn! ;-)

980 -- my, how very well-behaved we all are!

I was trying to be tactful... this being a man isn't as easy as it's cracked up to be. Still, at least I didn't make a lesbian faux pas like some people! :P

Mmmm, all the hours of sitting in front of pcs must shrivel our naughty-glands - nah that can't be right! *g*

That must have been so hard, on both of you! Now she can settle in and you can relax.

I feel your pain - it took me weeks to clean Frank's room.

It must be a relief to have seen her sitting and chatting.

I wish you well with the house clearing. I'm not sure if this is helpful - but it took my sister and I at least one full day a week for a…

Oh my goodness! I can just feel that horrible sinking in the pit of the stomach when you realised and there was nothing you could do about it.
  • 8 Jul 2020, 01:03
I'm glad the move went so well. It sounds like it might be a great place for her.

I'm glad things turned out okay! (Other than the rhubarb.)
