Topsy-turvy

I missed my first anniversary on LJ last year. Now I've missed my second, too: it was 3 days ago. Does my missing it twice in a row make it a tradition already?

In other news: Manasse is up and about, and this has created a definite problem. Leila, who up until this morning was his best friend and surrogate mother, and who is No. 1 Cat in my household, has turned against him big time. She's attacked him so viciously, I had to lock her in the spare room, where I can still hear her hissing and spitting. She even lunged at me! She's never done that. Me and Leila, we're bestest buddies -- or at least, I thought so. Manasse is bleeding again, and very distressed. He's in the hall, sitting watch outside Leila's room, and crying plaintively -- I never knew he could make that much noise!

And the weirdest thing: Clio, who ordinarily can't stand him, although she's keeping her distance, hasn't engaged in any open hostilities...yet. What's going on here? Why have my cats suddenly swapped personalities? And how do I best protect Manasse while he needs time to heal?

My guess would be that Manasse smells wrong - sorta like Manasse, but not really. Maybe try some of the tricks for introducing a new cat to a household - like rub one with a towel and then rub the other with the towel and back again, so their scents rub off.

As for Manasse, I'm sure he wouldn't like to be sequestered, but is there a bedroom or bathroom that you can put him in that has a little box on one side and the food dish on the other? His own room would keep him same and having the stuff there would keep him from over exerting himself. How to get him to not like himself? That's a good question for the vet. Maybe there's some sort of bitter tasting product that could be applied.

Best wishes with Manasse.

Hee. I just re-read this and realized there's typos that might be a bit hard to translate.

"keep him same" should be "keep him safe"
"not like himself" should be "not lick himself"

Best wishes with Manasse.

Thank you. He seems to be feeling better with every passing minute (ah! the resilience of youth!), but Leila's behaviour really has me worried now. I've still got her locked up in the spare room, and everytime I go in there she hisses and growls at me, which is not like her and a clear indication that she's very, very upset. And I can't try the towel trick because neither she nor Clio will let me get near them...though Clio, bless her socks, still hasn't shown any outward hostility other than the occasional growl to warn Manasse "okay mate, that's close enough now!"

I'm glad my boy is doing better, too -- but at the same time, worried about the personality transplant my other cat seems to have acquired. I've never seen her so upset before.

Hmm. Leila hasn't had a really bad experience with the vet that maybe the smell of Manasse has triggered a memory of? /end cat psych101

Glad to hear the boy is feeling a little better. Hopefully the ladies will be in a better mood in the morning.

I agree with yours and Spiralled's "doesn't smell right" theories. Maybe disinfectant the vet painted on his balls? I've seen similat reactions in my own cats. Poor little scrap. But at least G's soft furnishings won't get sprayed now.

Actually...it may not have been Manasse who was the culprit. Leila's spent the night in the spare room by herself, and this morning, it smelled -- well, you can imagine how it smelled.

She hasn't changed her attitude, either. She's attacked me, attacked Manasse, and when she lost the last bout, has crawled away under the sofa where 4 hours later, she's still residing, hissing and growling as soon as anyone comes near. 5 Years of harmonious cohabitation negated by one visit to the vet's...I wish I'd never taken Manasse there.

Maybe...the "balance of power" has shifted, with the visit to the vet? Since he's not an intact male, she has to decide what his role in the hierarchy is?

I can't see how that's possible, really -- she hasn't even come near him enough to notice that his wedding tackle's gone. No, she's in a strop, but God knows why. Hope she gets out of it soon, though -- I don't want to leave them alone like this.

Leila hasn't had a really bad experience with the vet

As far as I know, Leila's never had a bad experience with that vet herself, and she's been there a number of times. Which is why her current behaviour is so baffling, and frankly, it's freaking me out. I've got things to do, but I daren't leave the house for fear she'll seize her chance and rip my boy to shreds. Although he seems to be quite capable to come out on top in their little confrontations...

Clio has so far maintained her policy of careful neutrality; for which I'm grateful. But I wish Leila would just go back to being my sweet, dopey Leila again. This snarling, vicious creature of sharp teeth and nails that's taken her place, I don't know how to deal with.

Hedwig - it's me, Paula
I came across your site on one of my computers and thought I'd take a peek! How are you doing? She might be reacting to the fact that he smells like the vets office, or whatever they put on him there. Oh dear. I wish I knew what to advise you. I would keep them apart like you have done just to be safe until things improve though.

Re: Hedwig - it's me, Paula
Hello Paula! I was just thinking about you, and that you might know what was ailing my Leila, who hasn't strayed from her safe spot under the sofa after being chased there by Manasse 3 whole days ago!

I just took pity on her an brought her some food and water under there. She was ravenous. Poor puss, and it's her birthday, too...

Manasse doesn't smell of Eau de Vet any more -- at least, not that I can smell; and I've rubbed and rubbed him with mine and Clio's scent, but Leila's still not having it. I hope she'' decide enough's enough soon, because I would hate to have to leave her like this for two weeks while I'm off gallivanting through the UK from Monday...

Hey, did Carol tell you that we're planning to meet up in Glasgow next week? About time, don't you think?
