Raise your hand

...if you know anything about music promotion. Specifically, how to go about creating an interest for your favourite band in hopes of assuring a sell-out tour in 4 months. I'm talking about media coverage, airplay, that sort of thing -- even though I spent some time on the 'Net collecting gig listing sites and streams, I'm not really sure what I'm doing. Any hints, ideas and previous experience gratefully accepted.

Isn't that a manager's job?*

*I don't know anything helpful.

Partly, but we've volunteered to help out and formed a Common Rotation UK Street Team, devoted specifically to help promote the band in the UK. We want to do a good job, but Matt's still very much in the driver's seat! It's just, we think it may be easier for us to identify target media/audience as we just happen to be closer from a geological point of view.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, don't you agree?
May. 23rd, 2005 04:48 pm (UTC)
Didn't someone tell you not too long ago that you should get a job as a rock band's manager?
May. 23rd, 2005 05:04 pm (UTC)
Yes, they did! ::shakes head in wonder::

Too bad I don't know of any rock band in need of one...I have a feeling I might just like this sort of thing. Now, how to find out who's the promotor at the local radio stations, and get them on our side?
May. 23rd, 2005 07:34 pm (UTC)
hee did they indeed ... ;) ... good job you are on side now then!

That was an excellent response over there - I went to look - and drool at the gorgeous icon you were using *s* ... some pretty good ideas to add to the directions already thought of .. I particularly like the DJ Shout-Outs idea!
May. 23rd, 2005 07:45 pm (UTC)
This one, you mean? It's an oldie, by crofan28, but it's still good. And it mentions one of my (and freakspawn)favourite songs...

Yes, I was quite pleased to see helpful reply appear so quickly -- even though the answer was partly the same as what we'd come up with on our own already, it's nice to hear you're going about it the right way. And, we mustn't forget Kirsty's advice from way back, either. (I'm keeping my fingers crossed for more dates oop North soon; would be wonderful if we could rope HalstonFM in again). DJ Shout Outs = great idea, which must certainly be added to the list!

it's gorgeous I haven't seen it before .. and the track is one of my ultra faves too .. ESPECIALLY live - just guh.

Absolutely - I mentioned Kirsty's post somewhere in amongst my ramblings because she was so helpful .. and it would be great to have her be able to pimp Manchester - here's hoping!

though dammit I can no longer listen to the station on my PC - it all broke. grr

Thanks for picking up the net links btw :) .. if you'd prefer to do the radio? .. you could grab it instead *s*

Now have 11 people for the team (Kat has just got in touch) I wonder if after her it would be good to close the door to actual "members" - too many cooks? too complicated to coordinate? and then just recruit more people if they want to be involved - at the time when actual flyering and stuff is needed? - what's your opinion?

May. 23rd, 2005 08:05 pm (UTC)
Actually, I was already thinking that maybe we should close the door after Emma, but didn't feel like I should say that on the MB without running the risk of spoiling anyone's fun/treading on someone's toes. 10 is a manageable number (just about), but at present, even for 10 we may not have enough to do. We will, however, need a lot more people by the time it comes to flyering and pestering radio stations with requests -- say from mid-Sept onwards.

Kat volunteered? I thought she was pleading extreme poverty as a reason not to come see the boys this time round? Has she found a solution to that little problem, then?

if you'd prefer to do the radio? .. you could grab it instead *s*

Why? Doesn't Nai want to have a crack at it? She was so quick to find Radio Jackie, I'm sure she could find more -- how about Oxford student radio? There must be one! And I know she's worried about it being Fresher's Week -- but all my mates who went to Oxford never let that get in the way of a good party, so she should definitely coordinate the flyering and postering around the colleges. Tori can handle Glasgow (please let the boys go there again, too!) and target all the Scots...and Geoff -- what can we let Geoff do?

email :)

It's always worth a shot. I'm teasing a bit, but if you want to support your boys, there's no better way.

I'm teasing a bit

I knew you were, sweet -- you would have been so dead, otherwise. ;-)
May. 23rd, 2005 07:49 pm (UTC)
You know me so well.
May. 23rd, 2005 05:22 pm (UTC)
You are so right. What I meant to say was, of course, 'geographical'. ;-)
May. 23rd, 2005 05:24 pm (UTC)
I didn't even notice. :D
May. 23rd, 2005 05:28 pm (UTC)
Nor me, not until just now. Call myself a beta, do I? Harumph.
May. 23rd, 2005 11:28 am (UTC)
good angle .. more info the better ;)! The web info will be useful too :) .. btw that specific one you asked about .. only had time for a quick look .. was it more for bands themselves to use? I don't think we could link mp3s up elsewhere without express permission (lol - note how lazy I am replying here .. that message threading gives me a headache)!

Now -- are there any communities where we could ask and get them to raise their hand? hmmm....

What I'm positive about - aside from the enthusiasm .. which hopefully will not disperse .. is that pretty much NOTHING seems to be done normally overseas .. so ANYTHING we can achieve is a bonus :)

Good thinking! Let's see...maybe at acousticlounge, or similar communities?

.. btw that specific one you asked about ..

Forget that first one. It was totally geared towards America -- I somehow doubt we'll get many punters to come to the Troubadour if we advertised there! Plus, there seemed to be very little traffic...we want sites that get hits every day.

Also, you're undoutedly right about the soundfile-thing. But those British sites I found this morning I think are worth investigating -- send them a CD, have it reviewed (favourably!) and let them know dates & venues...It sounds so easy, doesn't it? I'm sure it can't be.

Nai came up with Radio Jackie for SW London...looks like this thing is snowballing already! ;-)
