Twelve years ago today, my niece was born. Not that I have any particular memory of this momentous occasion, as at that time, my sister and I weren't speaking (long story). The first time I met Soraya, she was 18 months old and stealing the show at my baptism. I can still see her in her white petticoats and lacey undies, pulling her skirts over her head and squealing in delight while dodging the altar boys trying to keep her away from the high altar and the burning candles. She stole my heart then, and she's been my darling girl ever since.

Last night, she called to ask me to come to her birthday party tomorrow. "Auntie, please will you come and see me on Saturday?" She sounded like she wasn't sure I'd say yes. Last week, Mum had told me Monique (my sister) was planning to hold the party on Sunday, and I said I already had plans -- my vicar friend is being confirmed in her new congregation on Sunday afternoon, and I'd already agreed to come to her inaugural service. I said of course I'll come, wouldn't miss it for the world; but my problem now is that I'm left with very little time to shop for a birthday present. It's been a long time since I was twelve...does anyone have any ideas as to what to give a 21st century girl who already has everything she could possibly want/need?

Oh blast! I do have to make it home again before Doctor Who starts, or I'll be in a foul mood for the rest of the week. 35 Hours, 5 minutes, and counting!

Yaya did too at that age -- God! what did she look like...;-)

I'd buy her shoes, but I'm not sure of her size...Books, I've given her plenty in the past and jewellery, she'll only go and lose it (takes after her auntie in that respect)...She used to love Barbies but I think se's outgrown them now.

She probably looked like me in make up now. I never did quite get the hang.

There was a time I wouldn't be seen dead without my makeup. Nowadays, I hardly ever bother.

Now my skin is getting blotchy, I'm reconsidering.

Perhaps I should as well. My skin's never been the same after a nasty sunburn in '97...my cheeks are constantly rosey now. :(

Mine always have been. Probably due to the ruddy Yorkshire blood.

Oh lassie, there's nowt wrong with Yorkshire blood! Sean Bean's a Yorkshireman, ain't he? OTOH, and IIRC, so's Alan Titchmarsh, so perhaps you do have a point...

It's annoying though when you go easily red at the merest thing.
