Twelve years ago today, my niece was born. Not that I have any particular memory of this momentous occasion, as at that time, my sister and I weren't speaking (long story). The first time I met Soraya, she was 18 months old and stealing the show at my baptism. I can still see her in her white petticoats and lacey undies, pulling her skirts over her head and squealing in delight while dodging the altar boys trying to keep her away from the high altar and the burning candles. She stole my heart then, and she's been my darling girl ever since.

Last night, she called to ask me to come to her birthday party tomorrow. "Auntie, please will you come and see me on Saturday?" She sounded like she wasn't sure I'd say yes. Last week, Mum had told me Monique (my sister) was planning to hold the party on Sunday, and I said I already had plans -- my vicar friend is being confirmed in her new congregation on Sunday afternoon, and I'd already agreed to come to her inaugural service. I said of course I'll come, wouldn't miss it for the world; but my problem now is that I'm left with very little time to shop for a birthday present. It's been a long time since I was twelve...does anyone have any ideas as to what to give a 21st century girl who already has everything she could possibly want/need?

Oh blast! I do have to make it home again before Doctor Who starts, or I'll be in a foul mood for the rest of the week. 35 Hours, 5 minutes, and counting!

It is probably too late now - but going by D-d at that age, and her cousins -
hair care stuff - whether bands bobbles etc. or brushes, spray in colour etc.
Earrings - preferably cute, ditto neckaces or bracelets - fabric type rather than metal seem cool at the moment.
Boxes - we just bought a beautiful laquered box for D-d's friend's 17th birthday - but I gave number 2 neice something similar for her 13th - to keep jewellery or odds and end of any sort in.
Kits for doing something - making your own candles seemed a big hit, also one we once got for marbling your own paper, or making your own hair decorations/jewellery/friendship bracelets etc.
Also vouchers for DVDs, CDs, clothing shops, either put into nice box as above, or with some slightly grown up sweets of some sort.

List might come in useful for Christmas anyway!!

That's wonderful, thanks! I like the idea of boxes...or getting her some sort of kit...Great! I'll see what I can find tomorrow!

And, as you say: the list'll come in quite handy for Christmas, too! ;-)
