Chirac's an idiot

I had to run out with no time for breakfast again this morning; and I could so murder a fry-up and copious cups of hot, strong, extra sweet tea right now -- if there's one thing I miss about staying in the UK for any length of time, it's the ready availability of the right kind of bacon rashers. Because although I may be able to get the mushrooms, the tomatoes, the eggs and the sausages (not proper bangers, of course, but something not too far removed from them), as well as the Heinz baked beans and the fried bread, and even some blackpudding on occasion, try as I might, I can never find the streaky bacon I crave. In Holland, bacon comes in wispy thin, see-through slices, and that simply won't do. Throw it in the pan, there's nothing remaining!

Oh well, I suppose I can go down to the canteen in half an hour, and get a bap and a watery soup instead.

See! See! I was just whining about this over on someone else's LJ -- I really don't understand why everyone puts down British food.

One of the things I love about living here is the ready availability of a wide variety of foods. One of our local grocery stores carries bangers and Heinz baked beans (they have a fairly stubstantial British foods section... and whatever they don't have, can be gotten in the next town over at the British Pantry). No black pudding (at least not that I've noticed), but I don't have a problem with that... it's the only bit of British food I've tried that that I've not liked.

Oh, and I meant to add that I feel your pain when it comes to bacon. A good portion of American bacon is the same way... thin and insubstantial. I grew up, part of the time, on a farm where we raised our own food, so I got terribly spoiled for thick-cut bacon... and fortunately, I've finally found a commercially sold brand I like.

Oh good, it's not just me then! There are loads of English dishes that taste good to me, and they're not all sweets, either! ;-)

I don't know why my fellow countrymen shudder at the thought of a steak-and-kidney pie, when they've never even tried it...and reading about Chirac and Putin snickering over the quality of British food and everyone here laughing politely makes me want to shout: "They should talk! One of them eats horse testicles and the other was raised on beetroot soup!"
