I'm through!

Coming out of the interview room, and whilst I was escorted to the stairs by the HR representative, I spotted another applicant I'd seen and spoken with the first time I was invited to the Home Office premises. So I greeted him and took two minutes to talk to him, and of course he asked me how I thought I'd done. And I told him truthfully that I thought it was really too early to tell, but that I had to own that I could have prepared myself better. All the while, of course, the HR man was standing there listening to me, too.

Anyway, I have just received the eagerly awaited phone call. I'm through to the next round; they said they were very positive they wanted me, but...the selection committee chairman who gave me the news also said that they had two caveats:

1) teamwork
2) preparation

He told me that they will place special emphasis on gauging how I perform in a team during the assessment round, because the work I do at HP at the moment does not appear to them to be so much team-related. Fair enough. I'll just read up on working in a team in the next week or so, and see if anything sticks in my mind.

He also said I could have prepared myself for the interview better, and it had been a special point of concern to him personally, but that I had redeemed myself by making that remark to the next interviewee that I could have done better if only I'd taken more time to read up on things.

But who cares?

I'm through!!!!!

YAY!!!! That's brilliant news! Am well happy for you!!!
Jul. 27th, 2005 11:16 am (UTC)
Thank you! I'm beside myself with glee at the moment.

The call came through on my mobile while I was actually going over the interview with a friend of mine on my landline, so he knew as soon as I did and when he heard me squee, he started yelling "congratulations!" at his end...I can only hope my interviewer didn't catch that.
Jul. 27th, 2005 11:15 am (UTC)
Excellent! I was thinking of you.

Did you tell them that you prepared your outfit very carefully?
Jul. 27th, 2005 11:17 am (UTC)
I was tempted to...I kid you not. Especially since it was all ruined by the dreadful downpour that's only now letting up.

I hope you get the job. I'm assuming of course that you like the work you're applying for. Do you?

I supposed it's partly your last entry about the secret service, but from your description of the HR man's stance I imagined the cigarette-smoking man from X-Files.

Ssssshhhhhh! I'm not supposed to tell anyone! It's all very cloak-and-dagger...but such immense fun!

Hurray, hurray, you're on your way!!!

Soon you will be a super sekritt agent - only of course you won't be able to tell us - you'll just have to say 'Well I am now able to leave HP' and we'll all know without you saying anything!

I'm over the moon -- but strangely, even though it was pouring down with rain this morning and I got all wet and uncomfortable, I never lost my good mood or my confidence; and going over what the man said on the phone, it was sheer force of personality more than knowledge of the organisation that persuaded them to give me another chance.

I know your MiL and your daughter landed safely in Oz, but have they made it safely home as well?

Wonderful news! I'm skipping with delight.

How many are through to the next round? Is it the final one? And how many jobs are actually up for grabs?

Questions, questions . . . along with a virtual thwack upside the head for not preparing properly. You can't afford to rely on chance overheard-conversations and godsent downpours to get you through the next one.

In the meantime - have a virtual celebratory drink with me -

Yes, ma'am. I do realise I scraped through this time, and will have to do better in the next round, which is the assessment round (more psychological tests and a written assignment).

If I can get through that, there's a medical examination, a second interview, and a top-level security check; so I'm only about halfway now.

There were a 136 people in the last round. They're looking to hire about 1 in 5.

Yippeee! Congratulations. :D

Thought I'd come out of shy!dom and let you know I admire your fortitude with this job application. I've been reading about your interview exploits... and to someone who has only ever had to attend ONE interview per job, and possibly a test beforehand, it all sounds positively nightmarish and I'm certain I couldn't do it myself. I wouldn't have the stamina.

Best of luck with it!

it all sounds positively nightmarish

As one of the other applicants I met this morning, while waiting to be called in, remarked -- the thing with getting one step closer each time means that it'll be that much harder to deal with if it should all go pear-shaped when you're that much closer to the finishing line. She was right; you do build your hopes up with every round you're still in the game.

Hey-ho, though. Thanks for the good wishes; I sure can use them!

Isn't it? Although it does mean that now I'll get to worry about psychological tests again...:(

Congratulations! It's been exciting to read what I have of your interview adventures, though it gives me wobbly tummy (I just hate job interviews. HATE! So. Much.)

Good thoughts, energy, luck, etcetera for the rest of it!

Too bad your outfit was rained on though. Oh well ...

Congratulations! It's been exciting to read what I have of your interview adventures

Thank you. I had no idea, when I started out on this road, that two months after my initial application, and with the prospect of at least two more months of tests and interviews ahead of me, I would still be in the running, and still enthusiastic. It would be such a blow if after all this, it should all come to nothing -- so I won't think about that possibility!
Jul. 28th, 2005 05:07 pm (UTC)
Congratulations! That's wonderful.
Jul. 28th, 2005 06:10 pm (UTC)
Thnak you! Now that I've had some time to think it over and let it sink in, I can't thank my lucky stars and everyone who's rooted for me enough -- because it's either down to them or else there must have been something in the water to convince them to take a chance on a babbling fool like me! ;-)
