Gloomy Sunday

They showed The Terminator again last night. For the first time in years, I watched it from beginning to end. Still enjoyable, it has dated somewhat, and not just in the clothes and hairstyles. Who worries about computers taking over the world and turning against their creators (i.e. us) anymore? Who's worried about the likelihood of a nuclear war erupting any time soon? Yet in the 80s, we did think that both were possible.

Was it a worldwide fear? I can't remember. But I do recall the top hits of the day making more than oblique reference to it, like Nena's 99 Luftballons, ineptly translated as '99 red balloons', and Ultravox's Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, or Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Two Tribes. I remember going on the march in huge rallies, protesting against the nuclear arms race and telling our government we didn't want them to agree to the stationing of American warheads anywhere in Europe, and most especially not in our country. What was our slogan again, something to the effect that we would rather have a Russian in our garden than an American in our hallway, or vice versa? I honestly can't remember...

It's been the most boring of weekends. It's been raining quite a bit, Leila's been driving me round the bend with her scaredy-cat behaviour, and there's been no sign of the promised confirmation letter from the Home Office. I want to know when I'm supposed to show up for this assessment centre they've got planned for me, so that I can start doing my own planning ahead and preparing for it and let Tinny know I'd gladly take her up on her offer.

On top of all that, I've been feeling totally uninspired to write anything, anything at all. Yet this tells me I

LITERATURE! - You have a story... Oh yes you do!
You are not quite sure what it is, but it
burns! It burns to be poured onto the page!

LOL...your icon!

It's been a very boring weekend here too, and it seems I've got the blahs. Not so much fun.

That's the kind of pill I could take. :)

I'd seen Terminator many times on TV, but when I bought the DVD, I was amazed (well, maybe that's not the word) at how much ITV had usually cut.

As for nuclear war, well I'm still scared. Suicide (Nuclear) Bombers can't be that unrealistic an idea...

Suicide Nuclear Bombers? Oh my! It doesn't beat thinking about! But thankfully I don't think it's that simple to tinker an atomic bomb together at the kitchen table on a rainy afternoon...

it seems so stupid these days, but I remember going to bed at night and being afraid that I wouldn't be alive in the morning because someone would have decided that it was time for us to go to war...I would lie awake for hours scared about it....

At the time, it wasn't unusual to read stories in the paper or see items on the news about people who had spread tinfoil all over their house to deflect radiation.

Me, I don't think I ever lay awake at night, but I was most definitely concerned about what kind of world or society we would bequeath to future generations.
