Sadness

They're chopping down age-old horse chestnuts in the centre of town. There's a sickness going round, and 200 out of the 3500 horse chestnuts in town have been affected; 30 so badly that they have to come down. The sight of these trees coming down makes me immeasurably sad. I love horse chestnuts. They're my favourite kind of tree. When as a child I was asked to draw a tree, I invariably drew a horse chestnut. They were the best trees to climb, and they were beautiful all year round, especially in spring when they're covered in pink or white spikes, which in my native tongue are called candles. I've always found it slightly disappointing that these aren't as fragrant as other blossoms, or that their fruit is inedible, but these imperfections don't make me love this type of tree any the less. Besides, if I want edible conkers, I'll just look for a sweet chestnut of which there are also a fair number dotted around town. And although there are plenty of other trees around, I know I'll miss the familiar sight of my favourite trees in my favourite spots.

Another thing that saddens me, is that since the last Windows Update, my pc's been having some resource problems. Before, I could leave it on all day and it would work fine. Now, I switch it on, it takes forever to get started, and after an hour or two, it'll close down or stall or seize up. I often have to manually turn it off by flicking the switch; and I don't know how to solve this problem. I've run defrag a million times, unleashed Spybot and Hitman Pro, but no virus has been detected and nothing I do seems to have the slghtest effect. Of course, I've never made a back-up; so even if I were to deinstall and then reinstall Windows, it would likely not solve anything, just cause me a lot of headache and frustration. It's sad, isn't it, that I've been working with computers on a daily basis since 1993, and I still don't know the first thing about them.

Yes, it's very sad. It'll take years for these trees to grow again. Damn fungus!
