I spent the day looking after my littlest nephew. There was some kind of logistical problem at kindergarten today, and my sister had called in a slight panic this weekend, asking if I could take him. She dropped him off at 8 this morning, and I've just returned him to the bosom of his family.

We had a fantastic time, the two of us. I had worried late last night that I didn't really know how to entertain a five-year-old, but in the end it proved easy: we played with his Lego, we watched some cartoons, we made pancakes for lunch, we played at swordfighting (he with his toy sword against me with the feather duster), he helped me with the groceries, and then in the afternoon and despite the incessant rain, we went into the woods and played hide-and-seek, and ended the day with ice cream. When his mother asked him if he'd had a good time, he said 'the best' and meant it. Knowing he's enjoyed the day as much as I have makes the sudden sharp pain in my ankle into a minor inconvenience.

Speaking of which, the company doctor has summoned me to the office next week, despite me telling him two weeks ago that my consultant had prescribed an extra four weeks of complete rest and no travel.
