gamiila sig #2

A few years ago, when our offices moved from Amsterdam to nearby Amstelveen, which is really the back of the back of beyond if -like me- you're dependent on public transport, Jobsworth promised me I would never have to cover the late shift after I brought him hard evidence that there are no busses connecting the industrial estate we're on with the rest of the world after 6:45pm. In return, he demanded I forgo my up till then early shift, and since he could show that I came in a few minutes late once or twice a week because of delays on the trains or busses, I agreed. For the past 3 years, my work hours have been from 9:30am to 6pm -- which means I have to leave home at 7:15am and can expect to be back there some time between 8 and 8:30pm. It's not ideal, but it's become what I'm used to.

I was therefore pretty shocked when I found out last Friday afternoon that without consulting me, he had decided that starting from today, I should cover the late shift, from 10:30am to 7pm. Which because of the crappy public transport links means I can't be back in The Hague before 10pm. Of course, I protested. HP is supposedly a company that cares about its employees' work-life balance. But he told me that was my lookout, and he said he didn't recall any agreement between us that I wouldn't be made to work the late shift ever. In the end, he did agree however that telling me I had to cover the late shift from Monday on the Friday afternoon might not give me enough time to figure things out, change my travel arragements and cancel all my evening appointments for the week following, so he's postponed it by a week.

I have a meeting of the flatowner's association coming up next Tuesday. It's important for me to be there because basically, it's about next year's maintenance to my building and the sums I'll have to pay towards it. Now Jobsworth is telling me I can't go to that meeting because he's changed his mind about my working hours.

The man is simply the worst manager ever. He doesn't listen, he hasn't a clue what any of us are dealing with in our jobs on a day to day basis, he tramples all over the rights of employees, he spreads negativity wherever he goes...and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it. We've lodged complaint after complaint, but the higher echelon just doesn't want to know. They won't promote him because they've got his number, but they won't correct him either. Our department's got the worst attrition rate in the company, but no one seems to give a shit.
