Use your loaf!

How stupid can some people get?

I just heard of the latest escalation in which an employee of the Belgian Royal Library, charged with scanning in a 14th century parchment, took the document, wax seals and all, and fed it through the ADF unit on a LJ9000LMFP. Not surprisingly, it got stuck.

Following the instructions of our technical support helpdesk, they managed to retrieve the priceless parchment, but not without tearing it. And now they want hp to pay damages?!

Isn't it just? I mean, you'd expect more from someone entrusted with the handling of old parchments, wouldn't you?

People are stupid. A spot of retroactive sterilisation would have been nice in this case. We could use the Tardis.

Oooh, that's harsh...but under the circumstances, entirely warranted. Let's go!

OMG! That was painful to read. Stupid stupid people! What do you bet if the staff person had gotten it out him/herself, they would have tried to mend it with cellotape?

OMG -- it doesn't bear thinking about! If i were a restorer, I'd much rather have the document be in tatters than stuck back together with tape. That stuff's nasty!

The first thing they teach you in any book/archival conservation course is that SCOTCH TAPE IS EVIL!!! I wince whenever I see that some well-meaning (or stupid) soul has tried to put something old and rare back together with it. ::shudders::

I took a very basic course of restoring techniques in uni. The first rule in paper restoration: cellotape is the mother of destruction.

My sentiments, exactly. I don't really care about the blame game going on now, but that poor age old folio...To have survived wars and fires and mice and whatnot, only to end up being casually destroyed by someone whose mind was clearly on other things...someone into whose custody it had been given, who really should have known better...They were probably trying to cut corners, not giving it to the professionals to digitalise but thinking: hey! there's a scanner on an MFP! Let's use that instead!

Eejits.

Well, we did neglect to put a great big sticker on the lid informing people NOT to try and put centuries old parchments through the Automatic Document Feeder...

Well I doubt the numbskull who did the deed has any money... damn some people are stupid!

It's not about the money. All the money in the world couldn't put the document back the way it was. :(

Numbskull is about the right word for the philistine -- what was he/she thinking?

If this person had been asked to copy the Ghent Altarpiece, do you think theyw ould have chopped it up in order to fit it onto the photocopier?

You should post this in mock_the_stupid (without citing HP to be on the safe side)
