A weekend away

Have had the most fantastic weekend, from the fabulous Depeche Mode gig on Friday night to the coming back tired and all cultured up to Coventry last night from our break up in the Black Country.

anonypooh came up on Saturday to join freakspawn, _mysteria_ and myself post-DM on a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. It was cold and windy, but mostly dry and we had a great time wandering around Shakespeare's hometown -- though we balked at the entrance prices for the museums. We stocked up on candy at a little sweet shop and have been high on sugar ever since.

Saturday night we stayed in and watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Green Street, as we wanted to make it to Coalbrookdale and our B&B before midday -- which we managed with several minutes to spare. We left our luggage in the care of the nice lady and went to view and take our photographs of the famous iron bridge in Ironbridge, the first world heritage site I've been to that has no banks and no cash point anywhere in the immediate vicinity of it. When I found I needed to get some cash, we had to hike all the way up to Madeley, where people tried to tell us we had to walk even farther up the hill, but luckily the pub we stopped off in to catch our breath had an ATM machine and we were spared further torture. anonypooh had left us by that time, and so it was just the three of us for a delicious dinner back in The Swan in Ironbridge.

After breakfast the next morning, we walked over to the Darby Houses and the Museum of Iron for an informative and very entertaining tour of the exhibits; then took a taxi into Telford. _mysteria_ got on the train while freakspawn and I went off to find the town centre and more picturesque surroundings...which to our initial amazement, we were unable to find. However, the mystery was solved when the lady at the information desk in the shopping centre told us that the town had been purpose-built in the 70s, so there simply is no picturesque old centre. Our disappointment was turned to intrigue though when we happened on the Telford Time Machine and the burning question: how does that golden ball get back from one end of the machine to the other, to be carried across again? Does it disappear into the wall, or...? __kali__, do you know?

We had a small feast with all of freakspawn's housemates when we got home, and then watched Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe on dvd, which I hadn't seen yet and quite enjoyed. And now Lorna is saying we should probably think about going soon, as she's going to show me round Warwick Castle today and we've been quite lazy this morning.

OMG you came to Telford! If I'd had known (and hadn't been up in Bolton/London) I'd have given you the tour.

The picturesque old centre would be Ironbridge. Telford is a 'New Town' (like Milton Keynes) built to move people out of places like Birmingham/Wolverhampton/The Black Country areas which in the 30s-50s suffered from terrible poverty.

If I told you how the ball got the other side of the Time Machine I'd have to kill you. Sorry but them's the rules. (It's clever magic).

Did you go to Blist's Hill while you were in Telford (It's a 'living' museum) - they filmed Doctor Who there doncha know.

Yes, I came to Telford! I would've let you know, but you were in Bolton/London anyway (not that I had any inkling of that, but still)...

The first thing we did while in Ironbridge/Telford was go to Blists Hill. It was cold and windy and occasionally rainy, so there weren't many people about and we practically had the place to ourselves. It was brilliant! Loved every minute of it -- from the junior clerk explaining about the coinage of the realm at the beginning to the singalong in the pub and the ride on the carousel. They filmed Dr. Who there? I didn't know, but I'm not surprised.

Not happy to hear that the secrets of the Time machine are for Telforders only, but I understand the need to preserve what little mystery your town has to offer.

You're lucky the clock didn't mind control you and either turn you into a chav or send you on a mindless ramage of murdering and killage.

Yes, Sixth Doctor Who to be exact. I didn't know until I saw a repeat on UKGold last year. Did you go to ye Olde Sweet shoppe in Blists Hill for sugary goodness?

Did I? I should still have a pink sugar mouse somewhere!

Hoorah! it;s pretty much the only place in Telford that sells Sugar Mice. Luckily I have a couple of dealers friends who work there and are apble to keep me supplied with my sugary crack.
