Ode to a saucijzenbroodje

I don't indulge often
Months pass and I don't think about the simple pleasure
of biting into one
But oh! how good you taste
And I'm suddenly reminded of that young man on the New York subway
who said the thing he missed most about his native land
were the tompoezen
Funny how it's the little things
that constitute happiness to people

Can I ask what it is? (I won't try to spell it.) :)

Sure! It's a savoury treat, a kind of sausage roll, really.

And the tompoes (pl. tompoezen, pronounced tom puss (-n)), as in 'cat'), is everyone's favourite: puff pastry filled with custard and a thick layer of (usually pink) icing on top.

Oh, that does sound good! Although, as to the tompoes, I'm a strange sort and typically find that sort of thing too sweet. Sausage rolls, and things like that, are a bit of heaven, though.
