Milestone

My colleagues didn't shower me in confetti while a brass band played a cheerful tune when I came in this morning. Not that I had expected anything like that to happen, of course -- but it would have been nice if today could have been a little different than usual.

It's my tenth anniversary at HP.

Before the merger, these milestones (5, 10, 12 and a half, 25 years with the company) were cause for celebration. Some time before, you'd receive a catalogue to pick your anniversary present from, and on the happy day, senior management took you out to dinner at a Michelin-star restaurant...

...but since the merger with Compaq and the cost cutting initiative which kicked off at about the same time, all you get to mark the occasion these days is a letter from the country CEO, thanking you for "your loyalty and effort over the last 10 years."

I could frame it, I suppose, and hang it up on the wall of my cubicle...Nah.

I know the Smurfs. They started out in France some time in the 60s as Les Stroumpf, blue little buggers who are always mean to Azrael, poor kitty. Gargamel is mean to Azrael too, and deserves to always lose to the Smurfs because he's horrid to that poor defenseless kitty...

But in the 80s, a Dutch singer (for want of a better word) had a huge hit with something called The Smurf Song, and it was bad, bad, bad. Though strangely, it seems to fit the mood of this post...;-)

I don't think I ever heard that Smurf Song, but I find myself at odd times humming or singing their little lala song to myself (and occassionally for others).

You don't know how lucky you are! So you sang lala lalala lalalalala, not lala lalalala lala lala -- much better. And appreciated. Thank you.
