Oh dear God, no!

I've just heard that Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond crashed a car he was testing for the programme yesterday, and is in a critical condition in hospital. Of course, this would have to happen right after I decide to swap over my Doctor Who-icons for Top Gear ones!

so so sad and shocking isn't it :( - I found out last night and was terrified to turn on the radio this morning. They are now saying they are "reasonably optimistic" for a "good recovery", whatever that means. Bless him and keep him improving. You have TG icons awww. I keep thinking back to the day I went to the studios. Such a lovely, genuine, friendly guy. He must get better.

He must, he simply must! I wouldn't wish the kind of accident he's had on anyone, but somehow it seems wrong to have happened to one of the Top Gear presenters. I love these guys, it's their interaction that makes me tune in to the show every time.

BTW, I hear that these days, there's a 9-year waiting list to get into the studios...

I have indeed. It's taken me weeks to gather them together, and even now I've only got 18 (and 2 of those are Petrolhead, too).

totally and absolutely.

9 years???? omg! (I'm on that list!) We were lucky to get an extra special recording - you've been pointed to that squee before I think? ;) - where they were re-recording links for the USA...so skipped the usual list.

I am totally in love with your icons.. Especially that Hamster one below. Love im.

That Hamster one below is one I found almost a year ago. I came across it again the other day and thought to myself "that's it! I'll go Top Gear on my journal!" It seemed like such a good idea at the time...
Sep. 22nd, 2006 07:44 am (UTC)
it is a good idea....

much encouraged by some news today ... James said Hammy tried to sit and smile when he came in and Jeremy said that after getting no reaction by being nice to him Richard smiled when he said "the reason you are here is because you are a crap driver!". Apparently the only physical sign of the accident is a black eye.

Keeping everything firmly in the crossed position.

I'm just commenting again to get another icon.

Sitting up? A black eye the only evidence he's been in an accident? That's brilliant news! Seems like they can't keep a good Hamster down.

But yeah - probably best not to uncross those fingers and toes yet...

You really ar fandom fickle these days, aren't you?

Fingers crossed for Hammy!
Sep. 21st, 2006 07:28 pm (UTC)
Am I? No more than usual, I think...

I'll certainly make it my business to only think positive thoughts with regards to the hamster's recovery. I want to see him back at work on top Gear again next year!

Or else!
Sep. 21st, 2006 07:34 pm (UTC)
Oh by the way how is your latin?
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:10 pm (UTC)
Very dodgy. Why?
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:11 pm (UTC)
I just needed something translated and thought you might possibly know such things.
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:14 pm (UTC)
Sorry, can't help. I took Greek for two years, but had barely started on Latin when I left Uni. But I'm sure you'll be able to find someone. There's a few Latin communities here on LJ that I know would be only too happy to help.
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:17 pm (UTC)
Okay, not someone impossible to find around here.

Would you still know the greek then?
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:33 pm (UTC)
I doubt it. I haven't been translating any in 10 years or more.
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:33 pm (UTC)
Okay, I'll stop pestering then. :D
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:37 pm (UTC)
Good, 'cause I don't like to admit I can't do stuff, you know? ;-)
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:14 pm (UTC)
I was so upset - somehow more so than if it had been either of the others. He is no longer described as critical, but they have confirmed that he sustained quite serious head injuries. I'm not surprised really, crashing a dragster at 300mph.

He is just so full of bounce usually, and talks about his kids - I hope he recovers properly, I really, really do.
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:30 pm (UTC)
He is just so full of bounce usually

Exactly. It's hard to imagine him having to be extra careful, or having to slow down, for any reason.

I'm glad to hear he's no longer on the critical list, but I heard something about severe brain injury and I can't deny that that's hardly more reassuring.
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:58 pm (UTC)
On the BBC website there is a place to leave messages for/about him.

I'm afraid the one who is sending 'preyers' gave me the giggles!
Sep. 21st, 2006 09:12 pm (UTC)
Oh well...I believe it's quite normal for people who've received a shock of some kind to start to laugh at the most inopportune causes/moments...
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:40 pm (UTC)
>>I'm not surprised really, crashing a dragster at 300mph.

Ah, but if you're gonna have a crash, why not do it properly?
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:44 pm (UTC)
God, you're awful, you are -- but I like you! ;-)
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:49 pm (UTC)
Praying hard for the Hamster in this cornar.. fingers and just about everything else is crossed: /
Sep. 21st, 2006 08:57 pm (UTC)
Same here. Our Hamster just has to make a full recovery, and in record time, too!
Sep. 21st, 2006 09:03 pm (UTC)
According to the latest reports he has severe brain injuries! This is really not good at all, Bless the boy and lets hope that they are telling us worst case senario's.

I feel for his family: (

Sep. 21st, 2006 09:18 pm (UTC)
Of course. It must be such a frightening thing to have to experience for Mindy and the kids, and for his mum and dad as well (I remember his mum test driving a family car on the programme, along with the other two's mums) -- they're all in my thoughts.

It was the mention of 'severe brain injuries' that really shocked me tonight. Broken bones, ruptured spleens, those are things I can deal with, but the brain...it's such a terribly important organ.
Sep. 21st, 2006 09:25 pm (UTC)
Your right, alarm bells and then some for me, because a lot of my clients have been in car crashes and have aquired brain injuries...
Saying that they are going to give out the worst case news.

He will be sedated for at least a week and they can never tell really until all the swelling goes down..

so I will be keeping everything crossed and hope for the best for the Hamter and his family
