Netherlands-Italy 3-0

Not a bad start to the championship. Not a bad start at all.

Well, that's all a matter of perspective, isn't it? ;>

Oh come on! There'll be other matches, and I'm sure gli Azzuri are still the odds-on favourites...But to beat the reigning world champion who really weren't giving anything away is quite an achievement, I think.

Oh, I agree. I was just pointing out that not everyone is going to see it as a good start! ;>

I know...I'm just happy our side won this time. Almost makes up for 2000.

Congratulations :) I'm disappointed, obviously... but the netherlands are my second favorite team this year (mostly because I like van der Saar), so yeah. Would've liked a different outcome, but it's okay. now I hope that italy beats romania, your guys beat france, and then all will work out somehow lol

Van der Sar is my hero, and has been for the last 10 years (I tend to notice keepers more because that always used to be my position on the school team, too). Too bad this will be his last big tournament; he won't be coming back to Oranje after this, and I'm not sure we've got another goalie of his calibre waiting in the wings yet.

France were playing dismally against Romania earlier -- they msy want to blot out that stain on their reputaion in the next game, which means they could still be dangerous.

Oh sure, France will always be dangerous, and my munich homeboy franck at least is in good form (although today it seemed like he's the only one), it's just hypothetical/wishful thinking, because I feel Italy's chances would be better with that scenario. I really hate this group selection. I'll always root for Italy first, but France and Netherlands are my backup teams (and Switzerland, because I can) but due to the group they're in, one of them will *have* to lose before the really interesting parts even start.

that was some nice football

It was, wasn't it? I hate static play -- this at least had some movement, and plenty of chances on both sides. Van Bronckhorst particularly deserves mention -- blocking a near goal by the Italians, creating the opportunity for our second in the same breath, and then scoring one himself as well...Quite unexpected.

I didn't rate the Switzerland-Czech Republic game on Saturday much, and France-Romania seemed like a non-starter all the way through, so I'm pleased this one turned out to be a little bit more interesting. Next up, France; let's see what happens there.

Congratulations! It was very fun to watch, though I did feel a bit bad for the Italians. Surely van der Sar could've allowed them one goal, at least? Think of the goal difference... :-)

Well, they hardly got creamed, so I'm sure they'll bounce back. And Van der Sar just did what he had to do - make sure no ball crossed his goal line. Though he did fumble on one...it was Gio van Brockhorst who saved the day, or it would have been 1 all quite early on.

Your team rocks so much for kicking Italy's ass! :D *dances*

Not a bad start at all.

Not a bad match, either, which is more than could be said for some of the others.

My daughter is a bit pissed off - she currently has exams and can't watch all the matches. She is fitting her beloved Czechs into her work schedule though!

She must have been quite pleased the opening match took place on the weekend, then!

....come to see me instead of going to London:) the place here is swarming with Oranje fans, i live smack bang in the middle of it and in vincinity of the fan camps:)I, myself am an Eurofree Zone, none of the British teams, or Ireland for that matter, made it and thus I am boycotting the event!:)

you should have....
....come to see me

You never know, I might still do that some day! For now though, I just hope that win or lose, my countrymen will behave themselves.
