Netherlands-Russia 1-3

And it's all over now for the Dutch team. Russia the deserved winners of tonight's match. But boy! does it hurt to have to admit that...

I sent my daughter an e-mail insisting that she cheer for the Russians - perhaps she didn't get it in time....

Thanks for trying, anyway...

But Russia won fair and square. Even if the statistics showed that our side had the higher percentage of ball possession, they simply seemed to have no strategy to contain the threat of Arshavin. Time and again they allowed him to get away from them and break through the defenses...which by the 112th minute had become hopelessly sloppy, and then that last goal in the 116th minute -- that was just a disgrace. Where were Ooijer, Mathijsen, Van Bronckhorst then? Nowhere near the first post.

I feel sorry for Van der Sar, though. This was his last time as goalie for the Dutch national team, and through no fault of his own, but simply because our defenders weren't paying attention, to have had to concede that last goal...that must have made it particularly hard.

Spain-Italy tonight. I'm rooting for Spain -- can D-d root for Italy, please?

I'm sorry :-( ...I was keeping my fingers crossed for Oranje!

So was I...and after the quality of their play in the first heat, I really thought they might at least go through to the semis this year...but they were clearly off their game last night, while Russia, unfortunately, wasn't. :(

It's really sad...Oranje should have gone through to the finals.

Germany was very lucky to have that very crappy game vs Croatia in the first round and not later.

But the good news for everyone is that it's only 2 years to the next world cup :-) and your team will surely have a great time in South Africa!

Let's hope so!

For now though, I'm pleased that Spain has won their penalty shoot-out. It would have added insult to injury if Italy had gone through while our side, that annihilated them and then allowed them to go through to the quarter finals on their coat tails, were sent home. (I don't like gli Azzuri - they're arrogant, defensive, lack creativity and play a negative football, IMO; and have done for the last decade at least).

I cried. No seriously I did! I was so dissapointed last night, all the triomphs of the past two weeks were just wiped out in one game :( am rooting for Germany now I think.

Aww...I really am sorry :-( I know, the Netherlands and Germany really dont have the easiest footie-relationship, but everyone here loved to watch the wonderful footie your team was playing!!

We were all looking forward to watch your team go through to the final and everyone thought it was very likely that no other team would be able to beat you!

Friends and I were watching the game in a big beer garden and we thought that it was a really sad outcome. Football can be very unfair. I so cried when we lost again Italy in 2006.

But you can be so proud of the great moments your team has produced. Those first 2 games were wonderful to watch!! And just 2 years and you can rock the World Cup :-)

But crikey...I really can't believe you consider rooting for Germany now!! Makes me feel happy though :-)

But again, I'm really sorry about the game yesterday...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a final between Germany-Russia. Much as I enjoyed watching the Turks the other day, I really don't think they deserve to win the Cup this time. As for Spain...well, they're certainly good enough, but it'll gilt the pill if we can look back on this tournament and say that we were beaten by the eventual winners. Plus, they have a Dutch coach...
