An update of sorts

I bought a printer, to help me in my quest of finding a new job. And no, it's not an hp. It could have been, but for the fact that this Canon 'Photo Lab Quality' inkjet happened to be on special offer at my local Dixons this week.

Hello there! Hope you're all well. I haven't been updating in the last few weeks because I haven't had much to tell, except that I've been busy applying for jobs. So far, I've not got anything to report on that topic. I'm in an outplacement programme, have meetings with my consultant once a week, and have done a few workshops -- quite boring stuff, really. Mostly I seem to be endlessly re-draughting my cv.

I've been approached for a managerial position by 'a new media channel', or a mobile network funded by advertising (i.e. a direct marketing) company, but I don't know whether I can believe in the product they're selling or who they're selling it to -- it's targeted specifically at the youth market and offers them a certain number of free texts and call minutes a month in return for letting selected companies/brands send MMS ads to their phones. On the one hand, I'm flattered: the job would be a step up on the career ladder; on the other though, I'm not sure if it's ethical to sell this kind of service to young people who may not realise the full extent of what they're agreeing to. Anyway, I've let them know that I'm open to discussion, but will need much more than just a broad outline of a job description (and preferably without all the jargon and hyperboles) before I commit myself to the application process (although I did phrase all this a little more diplomatically in my reply to them).

Apart from that, I've had several offers to come and work at helpdesks -- but I've been there and done that, and I don't necessarily want to go back to a position I last held 12 years ago; I'm looking for something with a bit more responsibility and content. Plus I want my new job to be -roughly- in the The Hague-Rotterdam area, as one of the reasons for leaving hp was the bore and bother of the daily commute.

I may have to take a reality check soon, though. I've been turned down on my benefit application, while I've already had my severance pay paid into my pension fund. Well, it was either that or let the IR rob me blind.

Things are not as tough here as they are in the States at the moment, but they are expected to take a downturn soon. Still, I'm confident I'll find a position before that happens. But thanks for your words of encouragement.
