What a difference a day makes!

Over the last week or so, I was becoming more and more convinced that I wasn't going to find any gainful employment soon. I'd been sending my cv and motivational letters off to so many companies and either not hearing back from them at all or if I did, they were letters of rejection. Then last week, I was approached by a headhunter agency based in Belgium, who were looking for a customer care manager for their Finnish client looking to expand their operations to The Netherlands. They'd stumbled upon my cv, which I'd left on one of those job database/search engine sites as soon as I knew I'd be unemployed, and in which I'd given my last job title as that of customer care coordinator. Close enough, they must have thought, and called to ask if I'd be interested in talking to them? What else could I say but yes? So they sent me the job description, and after I read it I thought 'wow' and 'they think I can do all that?!', but by then I knew they'd already briefed one of their consultants to drive up to Utrecht from Brussels specifically to meet with me, and I saw no option but to keep the appointment. I didn't think I would impress him, but apparently, I have because he's going to introduce me to their client next week! All I need to do now is re-draught my cv in English, write down two 'success stories' highlighting my accomplishments within hp, and a motivational letter of why I would particularly like to associate myself with this company, and it's onwards and upwards all the way! If they decide to take me on, I'd be doubling my salary at a stroke!

Of course, I would have to deliver on the promise they see in me...but I'm not altogether convinced that I can. I know I'm quite capable as a so-called Individual Contributor...not sure that I'm Mid-Level Manager material. hp certainly never even thought I was any kind of management material. Apart from an abortive stint as Project Manager around the turn of the century, I've never had that kind of responsibility. It would feel like jumping in the deep end with my hands tied and my feet encased in concrete...Then again, it would also be a poke in the eye for Jobsworth...Decisions, decisions...

I listened to my messages on my way home. One of them was from this company who are looking for a customer service coordinator now that they're expanding to The Netherlands, too. I think you can see the appeal (it's shoes!), but there is one little obstacle to overcome: it's being set up from Germany and for that reason, fluency in both oral and written German is key, more than English. So now I'm committed to an interview in Rotterdam, in German, on Tuesday. Oy vey.

It's like the busses, really -- none for a long time, then two come at once.

And thanks for the vote of confidence. Wish I could feel it myself, really I do. But I'm just a big ol' scaredy-cat at heart.
