No real news here

Diageo called earlier today, wanting to know if I was still available and interested in possibly joining them. I didn't quite know what to say -- although I've already reached an agreement with another employer, and am actually quite looking forward to starting on my new career with them, I couldn't quite let go of the ideal of working in an international environment...and so I've agreed to another interview, to take place in Amsterdam next Monday. By then, I probably will have signed with the bank, but anything could happen in the first month (trial period), and it would be nice if I could have something else lined up in case it doesn't work out there.

My sciatica is getting better, though slowly; and I'm kind of worried how I'll fare in New York. What's the point in going halfway across the world if you can't sit, or stand, or walk for any length of time? As of today, I've exhausted my supply of painkillers, and as Dutch doctors generally can't be persuaded to issue any repeat prescriptions of said medication, I'll have to see how I'll go once my last pill wears off.

I hope the pain is easing. And it sounds as if you will certainly be in employement, one way or the other!

I hope the pain is easing.

Thank you. It is, but I wish I could be shot of it completely. I've only got a few more weeks of freedom ahead of me, and I'd like to be able to spend them more productively, go places, before I start work. Although the contract we've agreed on includes 30 days holiday (I know! It's unbelievable!) on a yearly basis, I don't think it's expected I'll be taking any of them any time soon -- well, not this year, anyway.

And yes, fingers crossed I do well in next week's interview. Like I said, it would be great to have something to fall back on if the first job, for whatever reason, falls through.

Have you tried a TENS for the sciatica?

No, what's that?

My Mum has a very basic one, which she wears for her back pain at bedtime. Our maternity unit use them to ease labour pains too. They really do help - the research etc. is all proper medically approved stuff.

Oh wow! It sounds great, and I'd order one now if they shipped outside the UK...but they don't. But I've printed out the ad and I'll ask my physiotherapist tomorrow, see if he's got any ideas where I might get one (if it is actually available in The Netherlands, which I doubt...none of my doctors have ever mentioned its existence...but then, doctors in The Netherlands have a very hostile attitude to pain relief, anyway).

Well if you want one sending sometime, just say.

Well then, I'm saying!

I've spoken to my physiotherapist, and he had heard of its use, and success rate, abroad. They're not available in The Netherlands, but if I can get one from elsewhere, by all means go for it, he said. Though he did warn that they're not a miracle cure and that I will have to continue my regular treatment with him if I want to get on top of this.

So...how do you propose we do this? I set up a PayPal account years ago, maybe I can dust it off again...

I am about to head off into deepest rural Scotland first thing in the morning, not sure if there is anywhere in easy reach there that would have one, but our local pharmacy at home definitely had them in stock.

So I could get one on Monday, when I get home, post it to you, and then let you know the total so that you can PayPal it. If that isn't possible I can check with S2C about cheques and things.

Does that sound OK?

That sounds wonderful, thank you! Don't worry about getting me one with a main adaptor supplied, as a UK plug won't be any good to me. A basic one like your mum has will probably work for me as well.

Ooh, I can't wait to try it out! And I can't thank you enough for going to the bother for me.
