So I went into the city in search of breakfast, but I'd forgotten that it was a Monday and all the shops were closed until 11am...and so were all the places where breakfast might conceivably be obtained (except for McDonald's, of course, but I'd rather starve). In the end I had to make do with an over-priced croissant at the station. I blame my globe-trotting ways for my impatience with Dutch opening hours. Foreign travel has spoiled me, and I can't believe my own country can be so backward sometimes. And it's not just opening hours that irk me; there's also my countrymen's tendency to hog the elevators. Why can't they stand on the right like every other civilised nation? Or wait in an orderly queue at the bus stop? And why am I turning into such a grumpy old woman of late?
