I've started, so I'll finish

And that, in a nutshell, is what I've been doing these past few weeks when I've not been on here: I've been indulging myself, mostly in an effort to forget what a crappy PC my computer has become (honestly, I'm amazed it's actually working today). I've been toying with the idea of getting a laptop to replace it, but every time I've gone into town, I've come home with another pair of shoes...What can I say? I know where I am with footwear, and I don't know what I should look for in computers. Should I stay with a Windows platform, or go for a Mac?

Why can't I find decent flat boots here? *wail* Oh wait, I can't find ones that fit my calves - that's the problem. Grrr.

As for the lappy, yes get one. I have no opinion about windows vs Mac - I stick with Windows because I know it, that's all. Though someone at work, after four days playing with a Mac he'd bought for his father, ran out and bought one for himself. To avoid the shoppingFAIL, why not buy online? Does Dell have a European online shop, because they have one here.

Really? Seems I've had a lucky escape then, seeing as how my parents were all set to emigrate to Australia just before I came along. I've got quite pronounced calves as well.

My friend in Zurich had just bought herself a Mac, and has been nagging me to get one too.

I just have to point out that you aren't going to get an unbiased opinion from Mac users. Like the iPhone, they are in it for design and beauty and limitations of the OS or software are things they ignore.

And one other significant point: Macs are about twice as expensive as a Windows machine.

I never wanted an iPhone.
until I got one!
Now it is my BFF!!!!!!!!

If you didn't want one why did you get it?

I'm not taking the piss here, I'm considering one myself.

cos when I said I didn't want one - it was for no better reason than - everyone else had one! And I didn't want to be a sheep - no logical reason whatsoever. But I primarily use my mobile phone for mobile internet :) and it was getting pricey! Then we curiously walked into the Apple Store and I was hooked by all the funky apps and the 24/7 internet included in the contract. Now I looooooooove it! Integral iPod, phone, internet, games machine, camera, constant twitter connection .. endless attractions. It bugs me that if I'm out for the day the battery wont last into the wee small hours and the fact that I have to turn the internet off abroad or suffer horrendous roaming charges .. but aside from that. S'GORGEOUS! And I now wnat the upgrade. Of course.

such a sheep. Baaa!

Well that would be a problem for me - I always forget to charge my phone - and it only needs charging once a week.
Jul. 15th, 2009 11:20 am (UTC)
On a day to day basis all is good because I can charge in the car or from laptop or mains. But when I have a trip out - to London for the day, for example, and I'm texting, listening to music, using satnav, sharing video, taking photos, tweeting, surfing - and occassionally wanting to make a PHONE CALL?! It just wont last long enough. I'm looking at one of the power cases that will double the battery life fir such occasions ;)

Aha! I should have read your comment before I wrote mine - you have said the same thing only much more succinctly!

Nice boots. I wouldn't buy a Mac - it is like trying to learn a new language and then having to speak one language at home and another one at work, or drive a right hand drive car at work and an automatic left hand drive to go home.

They used to use them for the junior school children at home, then they went on to PCs when they got to secondary school. Reason for the Macs was nothing to do with ease of use etc. but that 'the small children like the colours'...

I know quite a few people like them, and are then always very, very vocal about how good they are, but then a lot of people like Brussels sprouts and I've never understood that either!

Funnily enough, I started out as a Mac user way back in the early 90s, during my stint at Leicester University. It wasn't until I arrived back in the Netherlands that I was properly introduced to PCs and MS-DOS...

Hmmm, sprouts. Yummy!

Okay, full disclosure: I have a Mac laptop, and I've always had PCs before. Tyson has a PC. According to Tyson, Windows users should probably wait until Microsoft releases Windows 7, because it has Vista beat hands down.

There are benefits to both. PCs are cheaper, but they come with less software, which is one of the big benefits to Macs. The software on them is useful, and not in a trial version. That said, there are fewer free programs, like freeware and shareware developed for Macs, and so if something stops working, it's hard to find a replacement. My experience with Apple customer service has been excellent; my experience with various PC brands' customer service less so.

I will say that I wouldn't worry too much about "learning" the Mac. It's different, but I got used to it within a week or two. My suggestion would be to go to the Apple store (or another electronics store in the area that sells them) and try it out.

Wait until Windows 7? Sounds like a plan!

OTOH, they've recently opened a Mac store/lab downtown, and I may not be able to hold out for that long ;-)

Supposedly, Windows 7 will be out next month, and a lot of the PCs being sold now will come with a free upgrade when Windows 7 is released.

That said, I love my Mac a whole bunch.

My friend, the one I stayed with in Zurich, had just purchased a MacBook, and was proud to show me what she could do with it. I was most impressed.

I also like the idea that you can sign up for private tutorials at the MacStore and learn how to use the different s/w and build a website and all that stuff...Like you say, the Mac support services are excellent...

But first, I've got to stop buying shoes, so I'll have some money in the kitty to get my PC replaced soon.
