No change yet

I spent the entire weekend trying to sort out my Internet access. Despite my best efforts, ranging from taking the computer apart and rebuilding it to completely reinstalling Windows from scratch, I failed miserably. Now my only option is to wait for my inheritance and the January sales, and get myself that laptop I've been thinking about

I can't tell you how much I'm missing you all. I have been given Internet access at work, but it's approved sites only; and neither LiveJournal nor Facebook qualify.

I miss you too. Hope you're feeling a little better, and that your computer troubles will sort themselves out. But, you're sure the problem is on your end and not somewhere in the street or elsewhere?

that your computer troubles will sort themselves out

Not likely...if they could, they would have by now. ::sigh:: No, the problems are definitely at my end. It started with a change of virus checker and an automatic Windows update. For years, I'd been using the freeware version of ZoneAlarm as both virus checker and firewall, until one fateful day my boffin friend persuaded me to let him install the deluxe Internet Suite version. Big mistake! Windows doesn't like that, and it completely fucked up my registry the first time it updated. I managed to sort it out then, or rather, managed to get it working again after a fashion, albeit with loads of error messages and a distinct loss of speed...I knew it needed a reinstall but I left it too late and the next automatic update wrecked the system so much it could no longer even boot. My provider is next to useless because from their end everything seems to be A-OK...but they did promise tot send me a new modem as my current one is 5 years old and basically obsolete. Now all I've got to do is hope I can solve the remaining registry problems and restore my Internet access once it arrives (I've taken off all traces of ZA, and that took some doing, I can tell you).

Why are computers so frustrating?
Nov. 30th, 2009 12:14 pm (UTC)
Because they're built by people?

That could be the answer!!
