Carefully optimistic

The day is turning out to be an exciting one for more than one reason: Rabobank have just called asking if I'd still be interested in coming to work for them. I said yes and now they've sent the job description to my mailbox. I can't see that it's that different from the job I applied for earlier, that they thought I was over-qualified for, but at least I've got another interview coming up and that's just the sort of boost to my confidence I needed.

It's coming up to midnight here, but yes, there is some partying going on. I saw some fireworks going off earlier, and and don't think those vuvuzelas will quieten down any time soon.

This is nice:

''On a wonderful evening for those who love football, Holland played with total team-work and echoes of their great tradition of total football. A team brimming with technical talents pulls gloriously in the same direction and that direction is Johannesburg. Sunday’s World Cup final awaits.''

- Henry Winter, in today's Daily Telegraph, London

(the English football writers could not, of course, say the same for their own highly-paid but dismal team...)

I was mightily disappointed with England's performance, even if I didn't really believe they stood much of a chance in the first place. I honestly believed they'd owed their status as favourites to a combination of chauvinism and wishful thinking. I was surprised Fabio Cappello got to keep his job, but hopefully he's learned from his mistakes and does a better job for 2012/14.

That's a really nice comment. I thought they played their best match of the tournament tonight, but they still made an unforgiveable mistake in giving away that second Uruguayan goal. Let's hope they'll learn from that and do better in the final.
