When God closes a door...

...He opens a window; isn't that what they say?

I received a telephone call first thing this morning, from an agency I registered with 2 months ago. At the time, they wouldn't return my phone calls, or see me. Now, all of a sudden they think they may be able to place me with one of their clients, after all. Was I still available, did I have any holiday plans, and could I start as per Sept. 6th (provided the client agrees to take me on)?

So, I'm taking a test to check my suitability today, meet with the agency rep tomorrow, and am set up for an interview with the client (Belastingdienst, i.e. the Dutch equivalent of the Inland Revenue) on Thursday.

We'll see how it goes, eh?

------------------------------

Yesterday, my 6 month old laptop gave me a scare. After using it for a while, I left it to make dinner; then when I came back to it, the screen froze. It wouldn't let me log on again and carry on with my work, and in the end all I could think to do was to let the battery run empty overnight. It was with enormous trepidation that I fired it up again this morning; but as is evident from this post, my solution borne of desperation had done the trick. But, I'm very disappointed to find that there's no way to reboot this laptop while its battery is still fully powered up.

Fingers crossed for the interview. Congratulations!

As for the laptop, couldn't you do a forced shutdown (hold down the power button until it shuts down)? Or if all else fails, you should be able to remove the battery. Not sure what that will do to your files, though.

I get this a lot, too. My laptop sometimes won't go into sleep or hibernate mode, for no adequately explained reason I've ever found -- the only clue I have is that there are no problems with either as long as my wireless internet card is turned off. Instead the screen just shuts down and won't power on until I force a shutdown and restart.

Thanks!

Next time the laptop freezes, I might try removing the battery...or the forced shutdown you recommend. Unfortunately, it didn't come with a hardcopy manual when I bought it, and as this is my first laptop, I'm still finding out about how it differs from a desktop exactly ;-)

I would just sit with my finger on the power button until the power went off, too.

I can't tell you how glad I am to have been told about the forced shutdown option now; next time it happens, I'll know what to do!

I've done both of the above with my old PC. When all else failed, removing the battery worked.

Such a logical step, really...

Wishing you luck, and reiterating that you hold down the power button until it reboots.

Good luck! (and another vote for 'hold the power button down')

Next time it happens, I'll certainly try that first!

Just an extra thought on the laptop - as a result of personal experience - check the settings for the laptop. Some (like mine) come with the setting that holding the power switch forces hibernation (or sleep or something else) rather than switching it off so it didn't solve a problem I had once. I've since changed that setting - I'm pretty sure it was under power management options - so I know the off switch will force a power down next time - it it happens again!

Good luck with the agency!

check the settings for the laptop.

Thanks! That's just the sort of advice I would have loved to have gotten yesterday when I was flapping about helplessly ;-)

There should also be a small reset button on the bottom somewhere, the kind you have to use something small to push. That is if the hard restart & remving the battery don't work.

That's what I thought as well! I've been trying to locate it, but either I'm blind or it's very well hidden.

If the forced shutdown doesn't work (like it doesn't on mine) then just take the battery out.
