Writer's Block: Boldly going

Which fictional world would you choose to visit, and why?

Once on a visit to Birmingham, my hostess took me on a tour of those places that according to the Tourist Information Centre had provided the inspiration for The Shire as portrayed in Tolkien's books. I distinctly remember going round Sarehole Mill and Moseley Bog in the pouring rain, and being cold and miserable and wet for most of the day...but also grateful for having seen these places, unremarkable as they may be in themselves.

I imagine that if I were a hobbit, I'd be very much like Bilbo, eager to explore the world beyond the boundaries of The Shire; so the fictional world I would most like to experience for myself would definitely be the wider one of Middle-Earth, and I would particularly love to see Lothlórien, Rohan, Gondor and Ithilien...even if, these days, I can't imagine the landscape to be any different than in the films. Which is good, as it means all I have to do in order to visit this fictional world is book a ticket to New Zealand. One day, perhaps...

Speaking of films, the challenge for Day 2 of the 30 Day Film Meme I so unwisely began a few days ago is to name a movie that you think more people should see

Now I don't know how many people have seen this film, or how many should see it, but I do know it's one of my favourites, both for reasons of cinematography and script/plot. I adore Chinese cinema for the beauty of its imagery and use of colour, and the strength of narrative of its dramas...and also for the foreigness of the society it portrays.

Raise the Red Lantern tells the story of how a young girl, forced by circumstances to become a rich man's concubine, slowly goes insane in 1920s China.
