My dad, God rest his soul, was an alcoholic. He found the strength to give up drinking, and stay sober for the last quarter century of his life, but by then he'd already lost his business, wrecked his marriage and (temporarily) lost the respect of his teenaged daughters.

I lost my first school friend to a heroin overdose the year I turned 16. By age 18, I'd buried five. I must have had an angel on my shoulder, because despite the company I kept, and the opportunities I was given, I never even felt the slightest bit tempted to try it myself.

Alcohol and drugs are dangerous substances that have the potential to destroy lives. But I'm glad I live in The Netherlands where a junkie is viewed first and foremost as a victim, a person who is ill and needs help, and not as a criminal even though they may turn to crime to feed their habit.

I have a very low tolerance for drunks, though. I can't abide them and won't have them anywhere near me. Needless to say, I never get drunk myself, though I do enjoy the odd glass now and again.

I have no idea whether the soft approach or the tough approach on drugs is the best. I think it is terrible that so much heroin was around teenagers though.

Drugs were quite a problem in the mid- to late-70s, I'll admit, and it wasn't just hard drugs, either. I tried some marijuana, but it had no noticeable effect and I didn't like the taste, and I quickly decided it wasn't worth spending my pocket money on.

When I was in my early 20s, living and working in a small city in New Zealand, there were a lot of drugs around. Young people seemed to be split into two quite separate groups — the goodies (not sure what they did) and the baddies (who took lots of drugs and went to see live bands play). I used to hang out with the badder ones but never felt like I completely belonged with them. But didn't belong with the other lot either. Indulged in some substances along the way, particularly as I was very shy and wanted to be more outgoing, but always did so with some caution and backed away from that whole scene later in my 20s.
