This isn't how I imagined it would be...

...not that I ever really did imagine it, but...

I'll be turning 50 in two days time. And like every other birthday I've had so far, it will come and go without any fuss. Mum phoned yesterday, to ask what I was planning on doing, and then invited herself round for coffee. I expect she'll bring me a card and a bunch of flowers; we'll sit and chat for an hour, and that'll be it.

I never really gave it much thought, but if someone had told me 25 years ago that my 50th birthday would be as uneventful as this, I would probably not have believed them. I would also probably not have believed that at 50, I would still be single (which I honestly don't mind), and unemployed (which I emphatically do). But...here we are.

Quick question: does anyone have any (home) remedies to recommend to stop a cat from overgrooming? I noticed the other day that Manasse has lost most of the fur on his abdomen; and no, he does not have fleas, or a flea allergy. I went to the pet shop but they just sold me a salve that he licked right off again...

Happy Birthday! I hope you and your Mum have a very nice chat while drinking coffee.

Other than wearing a cone - I have no idea how you'd get a cat to quit over grooming....

A cone would definitely stop him from reaching his belly, but it would also freak him -and the other cats- out. The experts agree that over-grooming is already a sign of stress, so...I have thought of putting him in some sort of onesie, but again, I'm afraid that would make his stress levels soar through the roof.

Much as he hates it, I think I'll have to take him to the vet's -- as soon as I can screw up enough courage to pick him up and shove him in his travelling case.

Poor Kitty!! A tri to the vet is always so scary.

*big hugs* I had a bit of an existential crisis for my birthday last year. Here's hoping you have a good day.

Thanks. It'll just be an ordinary day, with me going through job listings again...but with my mum dropping by ;-)

Wishing you a happy birthday. I also end up keeping the celebrations low-key or non-existent, then wonder if I should have organised something.

The thing with a milestone birthday like this one is that if you want to have celebrations, you'll have to start planning well in advance. I'm no planner, and the fact that I usually forget my birthday's coming up until people start asking me what I've got planned for it, means I never stood much of a chance of making this one any different from the rest.

I know some pet stores here sell herbal stuff that is supposed to act as a kitty tranquilizer. How well they work, I have no idea.

I'll see if I can find some here, thanks!

Happy birthday! Though I recommend you find some way to have a proper celebration. Letting a milestone birthday pass without making an effort is a recipe for depression IMO. Get your mum to meet you at your sister's and make them throw you a proper party, if you can. ;)

Manasse must be over-grooming for a reason - I think it would be worth trying to figure out what is bothering him. I would say a trip to the vet is in order. If it's just stress (my cat did this when his house was knocked down and rebuilt), you could try Bach's Rescue Remedy, it's supposed to calm cats if you spray it in their face (after they freak out about the spray, haha).

Even if my sister were inclined to throw me a party -which she isn't-, I think it would be extremely cheeky of me to give her only a few hours notice ;-)

I know Manasse's over-grooming must be stress-related (all the cat manuals say so), but the problem is working out what can be upsetting him. No child has left home to go to college, no furniture has been moved, the other two haven't changed in teir behaviour towards him...the only thing that has changed, is that I'm home a lot more - but he seems to enjoy that, judging from the number of times a day he jumps into my lap for a cuddlefest.

I was hoping I could avoid taking him to the vet's, though I suppose I'm left with no choice. It's just that it upsets them so...

Have you changed his food to something different lately, or noticed a change in his bathroom behavior? Could be he is having some GI distress....
