Food, glorious food....

Darn! I'm going to be stuck in meetings for the rest of the day, so no time to chat.

Oh well, I'll just post this meme I stole from onetwomany


What's the last thing you ate? a ripe, succulent plum, for breakfast.
What's your favorite cheese? extra belegen boerenkaas, straight from the dairy farm.
What's your favorite fish? skate, tuna, oilfish. Mackerel, sardines, herring, cod. Smoked eel. Salmon and trout.
What's your favorite fruit? mango, figs, and pears. And berries, I love berries.
When, if ever, did you start liking olives? early to mid teens, I think.
When, if ever, did you start liking beer? when Belgian beers started to flood the market sometime in my late teens. You can keep your Amstel and Heineken (dishwater), gimme a Gueuze (Lambiek or Kriek) anytime.
When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? I have always liked shellfish and crustaceans...except for mussels. Horrible little things they are. Smelly, too.
What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make? my Mum's famous for her rijsttafel; my Dad, who used to cook for us on Saturdays when we were kids, had the most delicious recipe for Spaghetti Bolognese, and his pancakes were out of this world.
What's the native specialty of your home town? Haagse Hopjes – a coffee flavoured candy.
What's your comfort food? chocolate!
What's your favorite type of chocolate? black and bitter.
How do you like your steak? the rare side of medium rare. Safe, but still bloody.
How do you like your burger? a thick home-made patty, on good bread with plenty of onion rings and a huge heaping of salad.
How do you like your eggs? hard-boiled, or scrambled with salmon and chives on dark bread, or in the form of an uitsmijter: sunny side up with runny yolks and cheese. And I like the cheese to go in the pan with it so that it's melted. However I choose to prepare my eggs though, I'll only truly enjoy them with plenty of pepper.
How do you like your potatoes? roast potatoes! Or in their jackets, with a tuna/mais topping.
How do you take your coffee? black. Preferably with cardamom.
How do you take your tea? with milk and sugar.
What's your favorite mug? at work, my big HP reusable recyclable refillable thermos mug: keeps coffee warm for hours. At home, my donkey mug.
What's your biscuit or cookie of choice? McVitties' Hobnobs.
What's your ideal breakfast? in winter, a steaming hot bowl of oatmeal porridge and fruit. In summer, a bit of bread and cheese, a tin of tuna, raw onions, and plenty of fruit. Occasionally, in either season, a cooked breakfast (eggs, sausages, bacon, beans, perhaps some black pudding, tomatoes, mushrooms, toast...and if I'm really hungry, add some chunky chips as well).
What's your ideal sandwich? tuna and apple salad; or sardines and mayonnaise; or liver and roastbeef with plenty of pepper and salt.
What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)? to be honest, I only really like the classic Italian pizze, but I'm not too fussed about the topping: anything with seafood or cheese, or vegetables, is fine.
What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)?strawberry or apple.
What's your ideal salad? Um...just salad. Various greens, and lots of them. Or fruit salad.
What food do you always like to have in the fridge? hmmm, I think only milk, butter, and eggs are essential to have in the fridge...oh, and Fanta. Preferably the pink kind.
What food do you always like to have in the freezer? I never use the freezer.
What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? pasta and rice, flour and oatmeal.
What spices can you not live without? pepper...or is that a seasoning? Cardamom, cinnamon, paprika (or is that a ground vegetable?), nutmeg, cloves, chilli.
What sauces can you not live without? tabasco, soy sauce and blackbean sauce.
Where do you buy most of your food? in my high street supermarket.
How often do you go food shopping? every day after work, and on Saturdays and Sundays too. Whenever I need stuff. I'm not big with the planning, so if I want to cook or eat healthy I'll buy stuff on the way home.
What's the most you've spent on a single food item? I bought a bottle of JD once, does that qualify? I thought it was outrageously expensive, and I've never been seen in a liquor store again.
What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own (excluding 'white goods')? I suppose that would be one of the sets of pots, pans and casseroles...although I have no idea. Most of them are hand-me-downs from my Mum, anyway. Or the set of good quality knives that were a present from my ex-stepdad.
What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without? the microwave and the stove.
How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients? say, 5 times a week.
What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients? seafood pasta: whitefish and prawns, fish stock, lemon juice and cream; freshly chopped parsley; capers and peppers; and green fettucini.
What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig and poultry? mutton and lamb, venison, ostrich, partridge, pheasant, pigeon, goose, duck and teal, hare and rabbit, goat, horse, frog. I very rarely eat pork, and shudder at the thought of eating any kind of organ (although I have had steak and kidney pie).
What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor? I don't think I've ever done that.
What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild? last summer's blackberries and rosehips, in the park nearby.

Place in order of preference: brandy, whisky, gin, vodka, tequila, dark rum, light rum -- but to be honest, apart from the occasional (maybe twice a year) glass of Drambuie, I much prefer softdrinks.

Place in order of preference: watermelon, cherry, pineapple, apple, banana, orange.
Bread and spread: hazelnut.
What's your fast food restaurant of choice, and what do you usually order? King David, falafa.

What's your choice of tipple at the end of a long day? Fanta! Or on hot days, water.
