I've a freakin' mullet!

I've just left the hairdresser's...and I'm not sure how I feel about the change in hairstyle I've acquired. Juan, bastard, had taken a holiday and that left me no other option but to entrust myself to one of his staff. A sweet girl, good at her job, but maybe just a little bit too scissor-happy...

It's a hot day. It's been a hot week. It's been getting uncomfortably hot under my shaggy dog do. So she said she would like to make it lighter and airier for me, and that she would like to make more of my face visible by cutting back the fringe. "But I don't want it too short", I said. Now it's half-long at the back and short at the front, the sides and on top. I've lost a lot of hair and it does feel much lighter and cooler...but I feel so exposed and I've just realised: I've got a freakin' mullet!

It's going to be my nephew Mick's 16th birthday on Monday. To celebrate, I'm taking him to the festive opening of the Tolkienshop tomorrow.

I read the Lord of the Rings-trilogy when I was 15, 16 - and was so impressed with it that for years afterwards I read everything by and about Tolkien that I could find. Mick is now as obsessed by the thought of finding out more about Quenya and Sindarin as I used to be, and apart from asking me to get him The Silmarillion for his birthday this year, has been pestering me about finding resources on the web to aid in his quest. And that's how I found out that there's going to be a grand opening of a shop devoted to all things Middle-Earth in Leiden. I called Mick, and he was immediately enthusiastic. Which means that tomorrow, I've got a date with one of my favourite young men ;-)!

They gave you a mulet on your Birthday, how awful is that?

Very. Think I'll go back there next week and have them cut the rest of it off, too. Or wait until Juan gets back and let him salvage it...and fire that girl!

At least it can be rescued.

That remains to be seen...And even if it can be, it'll mean having it cut short. When I like it shoulder-length or longer.

People are strange, though. Everyone here at the office thinks the do is quite fetching....

Still, in the end you're the one it has to please. It's on your head after all.

Happy Birthday.

Thank you!

I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I'm really, really sorry. I'm really, really, really sorry. Just because I went off on holiday without getting myself organised doesn't mean I don't love you. Happy Birthday, sweetie. Hope it was a great one. I promise you some spoiling to make up for it when you come visit :-)

A mullet? Seriously? Coo! Go on - show!

Did I miss something? What's there to be sorry about? Surely you can't mean the fact that you buggered off to God knows where and left me to celebrate my b'day on my tod,can you? It's alright, I don't hold it against you, and I had a very nice birthday in spite of your absence, anyway...

Not on your life! You'll see it when I get to Kent later on in the month (if I haven't had it cut before then).
